Kathy has one of the best jobs in the world as a marine biologist and lecturer at the UQ Research Station on North Stradbroke Island. Between teaching students, studying manta rays and raising her children, Kathy is trying to ascertain the impact rubbish is having on sea turtles.
Recently, in recognition of her sea turtle research, Kathy was awarded the Goldring Emerging Marine Scientist Fellowship for her commitment to the creation of a sustainable environment through science, public education and collaborative partnerships.
Kathy’s manta ray work is also taking science further, with her team recently deploying satellite tags which are tracking the broad scale movement of the mantas to help answer important questions about this globally vulnerable species.
Kathy always wanted to be a marine biologist and UQ has given her the opportunity to live her dream. Another reason why there’s more to uni at UQ.
