What is Nutrition?

Human nutrition is a global term which concerns the way that foods and nutrients are acquired and used. A career in nutrition focuses on encouraging the population to achieve healthier eating habits and reducing the burden of diet-related disease.

UQ has introduced the Bachelor of Health Sciences in response to Industry demand. This innovative degree includes studies in biomedical science, biochemistry, nutrition, behavioural sciences and food sciences. Graduates are job ready and are able to enter a career in Nutrition or undertake the Master of Dietetics Studies to become a Dietitian.

What Will I Do?

Nutritionists work to improve the health of individuals and the community through tasks such as:

  • coordinating and supporting community education and awareness activities on healthy dietary habits and nutrition
  • developing educational resources around healthy eating, lifestyle disease
  • analysing and advising on information about food, nutrition and related health problems to communities
  • assisting communities and nutrition workers to develop local food and nutrition plans
  • developing food and nutrition policy to guide program development
  • communicating nutrition information to the public by interpreting nutrition and food science research findings
  • undertaking research

Who Will I Work With?

Nutritionists work both individually and in teams to provide dietary advice to groups and communities to encourage healthy lifestyles.

Where Will I Work?

Nutritionists have a high level of contact with the public and work in a variety of areas in their own community in both government and non-government health services, including the media, schools, and work sites. Nationally nutritionists also work for the national food regulator, food industry and in research programs

Is it a Good Career?

Nutrition is a fast growing field as the Australian government continues to emphasise the importance of preventative health in our society.
Nutritionists enjoy variety in their work tasks and have the satisfaction of helping people improve their quality of their life.

How Much Will I Earn?

The starting salary range for graduates, depending on a variety of factors, can be between $45,000 and $55,000.

What Qualifications and Skills Do I Need?

People considering a career in nutrition will need good communication skills, have an aptitude for science and research, be able to work both independently or as part of a team and be interested in helping people.

The necessary qualifications can be obtained via a Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Nutrition. Further postgraduate study will enhance employability and remuneration.

Future Pathways

The Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in nutrition is the recommended pathway to the Master of Dietetics Studies and satisfies all the pre-requisite courses required for that program.

Alternatively, Bachelor of Health Science graduates may continue to a clinical career such as:

Medicine applying for graduate entry to the Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery (MBBS)
Exercise Science by enrolling in a Master of Exercise Science
Occupational Therapy by enrolling in a Master of Occupational Therapy Studies
Physiotherapy by enrolling in a Master of Physiotherapy Studies
Speech Pathology by enrolling in a Master of Speech Pathology Studies
Audiology by enrolling in a Master of Audiology Studies
Public Health by enrolling in a Master of Public Health
Dietetics by enrolling in a Master of Dietetics Studies
