student story

"Vet Science is hard to get into, and this is a good thing because it makes people really consider whether they want to do it. If you don't get the OP, taking a year to upgrade through science or another program is not a big deal in the scheme of things".

Alison's Story

Alison didn't get the OP she needed for Veterinary Science, so she studied a semester of Physiotherapy and a semester of Science in her first year at UQ.

Both programs offered a solid foundation, with Physiotherapy providing an overlap in areas such as physiology and anatomy, and Science providing a valuable variety of study areas and electives.

"My first year allowed me to become more acquainted with university processes around exams and assignments which made for an easier transition into the demanding Physio degree."

Liam's Story

Liam didn't get the OP he needed for Physiotherapy, so he studied a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sports Studies for his first year at UQ. This enabled him to study Human Movement subjects, and also gave him a taste of Arts courses such as nutrition, music, and psychology.

Liam's tips for school leavers

  • Don't give up! Even if you don't get the OP score to get straight in to your desired program there are always pathways open to you. After a year of full time university study your uni grades will be considered over your OP, so make sure you work hard and chase it.
  • Research the programs you are interested in by talking to current or past students, but remember that everyone's experience will be different.

Dannika's Story

Dannika didn't get the OP she needed to get into Speech Pathology, so she studied the Bachelor of Health Sciences.

The Health Sciences program provided a good overview of the health system in general, and also gave Dannika the skills to transfer to either a clinical pathway or any career in health. She enjoyed Health Sciences so much, she decided to complete the degree and then study Speech Pathology at the postgraduate level.

"In my second year I added Commerce to my Engineering degree, and also changed my major from Mechanical to Civil. It made me appreciate how easy it can be to change your path of study at UQ"

Miranda's Story

While Miranda did get the OP she needed to get into Engineering, throughout her final year at high school she was very unsure of what she wanted to study at university. She therefore investigated the various pathways into programs so she could be fully informed and prepared when her OP was released, including the programs she could undertake to upgrade to her chosen degree, or entering as a full fee paying student.
